The FIA has confirmed that Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen and three other Formula 1 drivers will escape penalties after being found in breach of the International Sporting Code at the Dutch Grand Prix.
Hamilton and Verstappen took part in Saturday’s sprint at Zandvoort, finishing sixth and seventh respectively. Before the race, however, the FIA investigated both drivers alongside Yuki Tsunoda, Lance Stroll and Valtteri Bottas over an alleged rules violation.
The five drivers were deemed to have breached Article 12.2.1.i of the International Sporting Code, which covers failure to comply with instructions issued in the Race Director’s Event Notes.
The incident happened as the drivers approached the grid before the start of the sprint. According to the FIA, all five cars stopped before reaching Safety Line One, contrary to the instructions laid out by the Race Director.
Item 24 of the Event Notes referenced Article B5.2.4 of the FIA Formula 1 Sporting Regulations. The regulation states that cars must complete their reconnaissance lap and reach the starting grid under their own power in order to be allowed to start from the grid.
Despite confirming that the drivers had failed to follow the specified procedure, the FIA stewards decided that no sporting penalties would be issued.
As a result, Hamilton, Verstappen, Tsunoda, Stroll and Bottas were all allowed to continue their Dutch Grand Prix weekend without grid drops, time penalties or other punishments connected to the incident.
The decision is particularly significant for Hamilton and Verstappen, who remain involved in a competitive championship battle. Both drivers were able to race without any additional disadvantage, with Verstappen finishing sixth and Hamilton seventh in the sprint.
The FIA’s verdict demonstrates that although the regulations were technically breached, the stewards did not believe the circumstances justified a sporting sanction. The drivers therefore avoid any further consequences from the incident.
Attention will now turn to the remainder of the Dutch Grand Prix weekend, with Sunday’s main event providing another opportunity for Hamilton and Verstappen to score important championship points.
After their respective sprint finishes, both drivers will be looking to produce stronger performances in the feature race at Zandvoort. With the championship battle continuing to develop, every point could prove crucial as the season progresses.
