Camila Giorgi says she is training three hours a day despite being pregnant as the former Italian tennis star continues preparing for her planned return to professional tennis in 2027.
In May 2024, the former four-time WTA champion stunned the tennis world by suddenly retiring without making any announcement, with her name first appearing on the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s retired players list.
Around the same time, Giorgi was also making headlines in her home country over reported tax issues and legal investigations before later insisting she had done nothing wrong.
Then, in April this year, the former world No. 26 confirmed during an Instagram Q&A that she planned to return to the Tour in 2027.
Giorgi says pregnancy won’t stop her preparations for a comeback
Speaking about her comeback plans for La Gazzetta dello Sport, Giorgi – who is expecting her first child in September – claimed that she has already been training seriously for months and isn’t worried about returning to peak physical condition afterward.
“I’ve been training seriously for a few months. Being pregnant, I am closely monitored by doctors, because the baby and its well-being come first. There will of course be a short break after childbirth, but I’m not worried about getting back in shape: I train about three hours a day,” the former world No. 26 said.
How will Giorgi look in her return after an extended absence?
When Giorgi returns in 2027, she will already be 35 years old – she turns 35 in December. Returning after a long absence is never easy, especially after being out of competition for two and a half years.
However, several top players have shown in recent years that it can be done. Elina Svitolina returned after giving birth and quickly re-established herself among the world’s best, while Naomi Osaka and Belinda Bencic have also successfully resumed their careers after becoming mothers. Serena Williams also welcomed her second child before making her recent return to professional tennis.
It remains to be seen when and where exactly Giorgi’s comeback will begin.
